At 6962m, Cerro Aconcagua is the highest peak on the American continent. Ever since it was conquered, it has been one of the top destinations in the world for expeditions. Although climbing Aconcagua is technically less demanding than many lower-altitude peaks, it is still a challenge to be taken seriously. Fitness, patience and acclimatization are key, and, unless you're fairly experienced at tough high-altitude treks, you shouldn't even consider going up… (20 photos: JM Karsenti)
